On the principal Sunday Mass, the Priest intones the antiphon "Asperges me" (or "Vidi aquam" during Pascaltide) and the chant is taken up by the choir and congregation.
During the chant, the Priest sprinkles the altar, the clergy and people with holy water. He is assisted by two altar servers who join him in procession through the Church.
Holy water is a sacramental which when, used devoutly, can remit venial sins. It is customary for the faithful to make the sign of the cross as they are sprinkled with holy water.
After the aspersion, the Priest returns to face the altar and intones some additional verses and the prayer "Exaudi nos, Domine" ("Graciously Hear Us, O Holy Lord...").
