The Priest scatters incense over lighted coals in the thurible and pronounces the blessing "Ab illo benedicaris" ("Be thou blessed by Him in Whose honour thou shalt be burned").
The burning of incense is an ancient tradition within the Church. It was practised during sacrifices in the Jewish Temple of the Old Testament. The smoke rising from the thurible is likened to the prayers of the faithful ascending to God.
