The Priest stands at the missal and while making the sign of the cross reads the Introit (entrance prayer) which varies according to the Church's calendar.
The Priest then returns to the centre of the altar and recites the prayers "Kyrie, eleison" ("Lord, have mercy on us"). This is a nine-fold prayer begging the persons of the Trinity for mercy.
The Kyrie is one of the oldest prayers of the Mass and is still recited in Greek rather than Latin out of respect for the time before Christianity was widely accepted by the Roman world.
