Out of respect for the Gospel, the people stand. The Priest (or at Solemn Mass, the Deacon) goes to the North side of the altar (known as the "Gospel" side). He greets the people again with the words "Dominus vobiscum".
The Priest (or Deacon) makes the sign of the cross on the missal, then on his forehead, lips and breast and announces the Gospel with the words "Initium [or Sequentia] sancti Evangelii secundum...." ("The beginning [or continuation] of the holy Gospel according to..."). The faithful make the sign of the cross themselves in the same manner as the Priest.
The Priest then receives the thurible from the Master of Ceremonies and incenses the missal.
The Priest then sings the Gospel in full. At the end of the Gospel the Master of Ceremonies responds "Laus tibi, Christi" ("Praise to Thee, O Christ").
