The Credo

On Sundays and major festivals the Priest returns to the centre of the altar and intones the first words of the Credo: "Credo in unum Deum" ("I believe in One God...").  The Priest continues to read the Creed while the choir and congregation sing the remainder of the hymn.

The Creed is of ancient origin and a guarantee of belief against heresy.  It was codified by the Council of Nicea in AD 325 and revised by the Council of Constantinople in AD 381.
