The Priest kisses the altar and turns to the people greeting them once again with the words "Dominus vobiscum" ("The Lord be with you.")
This action marks the start of the second part of the Mass - the Mass of the Faithful. In ancient times, all unbaptized believers were required to leave Mass at this point.
The Priest then turns back to the altar and reads the Offertory antiphon according to the Proper Mass for that day, while the choir sing the same prayer.
The Offertory is a verse from Scripture closely related in meaning to the Introit and Gradual which precede it and the Communion antiphon which will follow.
