The Mass in Words and Pictures

The "Agnus Dei" and Prayer for Peace for the Church

The Priest recites the prayer 'Agnus Dei'. Photograph © Society of Saint Pius X 2003.

With bowed head and striking his breast three times, the Priest implores pardon for his sins using the words of Saint John the Baptist: "Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi" ("Lamb of God, who takest away the sins of the world...").  This prayer is sung by the choir.

Prayer for Peace for the Church

The prayer "Domine Jesus Christe" ("O Lord Jesus Christ, who hast said to Thy Apostles: Peace I leave you, My peace I give you...") begs for peace in the Church.

At Solemn Mass, the Celebrant gives the kiss of peace to the Deacon, who gives it to the Subdeacon who gives it to the clergy present.  This prayer is omitted in Masses for the Dead.
