The Mass in Words and Pictures

The Dismissal

The Priest greets the people with the words 'Dominus, vobiscum'. Photograph © Society of Saint Pius X 2003.

The Priest goes to the middle of the altar and kisses it and sings "Dominus Vobiscum" to which the congregation replies "Et cum spiritu tuo."

The final salutation is sung "Ite, Missa est." ("Go, you are dismissed") or "Benedicamus Domino" ("Let us bless the Lord").  During Masses for the dead the dismissal is "Requiescant in pace" ("May they rest in peace") and the response is "Amen."
