The Mass in Words and Pictures

Final Prayer and Blessing

The Priest recites the final prayer and pronounces a blessing. Photograph © Society of Saint Pius X 2003.

The Priest bows towards the altar for the prayer "Placeat tibi" ("May the homage of my bounded duty be pleasing to Thee...") and then kisses the altar.

Except during Masses for the Dead, the Priest then pronounces a final blessing "Benedicat vos omnipotens..." ("May almighty God bless you, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.") to which the people reply "Amen."
